In the context of the exhibition Transcendence, which gathers together monumental sculptures made of titanium by the Chinese artist Wallace Chan, hosted in the evocative surroundings of the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Venice, art-frame presents Let’s talk about…, a series of talks which will take place on three consecutive Thursdays during the month of September.
The Public Programme begins on Thursday 12 September with the talk Musicophilia which, starting from the immersive soundscape of Chan’s exhibition, which is composed by Brian Eno, will address the relationship between visual arts and music. Moderated by HECK, artistic director of art-frame magazine, the talk will involve James Putnam, curator of the retrospective; Emanuele Wiltsch Barberio, musician (who curated, in 2020, a show that featured Brian Eno and the British sculptor David Tremlett, set up in the spaces of the Galleria Michela Rizzo, on the Isola della Giudecca) and founder of the Venetian label Cosmogram, which this year produced the soundtrack of the site-specific video installation Nebula signed by Giorgio Andreotta Calò for the homonymous exhibition by Fondazione in Between Art Film at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto (open until 24 November); and finally Bruno Zamborlin, researcher in the field of artificial intelligence and sound artist (who in 2023 took part in the Italian Pavilion of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale), founder of HyperSurfaces, international pioneer in the development of intelligent interfaces.
The second event, which will take place on Thursday 19 September, will focus on sacred architectures as exhibition spaces: the talk Churches as spaces for contemporary art?, once again moderated by HECK, brings the viewer to discover this evocative and singular choice. The panel features curator James Putnam; composer and visual artist Zad Moultaka (who represented Lebanon at the 2017 Biennale, coming back to Venice in 2019 with the exhibition project The Death of James Lee Byars, set up in the Church of Santa Maria della Visitazione and curated by Walter Vanhaerents, and again in 2021 with Requiem for a New World at the Basilica S.S. Giovanni e Paolo); and the architect and exhibition designer Flavia Chiavaroli, who worked with the Holy See Pavilion for the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia and will provide the viewer with a unique key through which to interpret the space and the connection with the contemporary art viewer.
On Thursday 26 September, the final chapter will explore the interweaving of arts and crafts. Titled Arts and/or Crafts, the talk will explore the similarities and differences between art, design and craft, in the month when Venice, thanks to the Biennale Homo Faber and the 8th edition of The Venice Glass Week, becomes an unmissable crossroads for the highest calibre of international artisans. Moderated by the independent critic and curator Daniele Capra, the guests of this event will be Susanna Pozzoli, project director of Homo Faber in Città, the event spread throughout the lagoon that invites visitors to discover an “unseen” Venice, visiting the places where Venetian craftspeople create their remarkable objects. And again Francesca Giubilei of VeniceArtFactory, curator of exhibitions dedicated to the art of glass and co-founder of the Venice Design Biennial; and finally the artistic duo Penzo+Fiore.
